Coming up on the final week. Recap!
over 4 years ago – Thu, Oct 17, 2019 at 06:52:49 PM

Happy Day!

Thank you very much for the successful campaign! We're closing in on the final week.

We have a feeling we might hit that first stretch goal before all is said and done. :D

Thanks everyone for your support and pledges! We know gaming can be expensive and there are so many many options to chose from. We're honored that you're with us!

With that in mind, we've worked hard to keep our funding goal reasonable and our prices low. Fugue is also a small box game, so it won't make a big demand on your gaming shelf space.

As always, we're here to answer any questions you have. Feel free to share, either here, in the kickstarter comments, or private message.

Near Future and State of the Game

As it stands we have everything ready to go to the printers except the rulebook, which we want to update. We want to have a nice looking and easily understandable rulebook with all of the new information clearly laid out (various game modes, unlocked stretch goals, etc). We don't anticipate this taking too long to do, and we might ask for your opinion on how it's turning out as we go.

8 Player Mode

Rules for this will be included in the rulebook, but it will require two copies of Fugue to play with more than 4 players.

Fugue: Lost Highway Mode

This is a game mode that we spoke about potentially including earlier in the campaign. It slightly changes the rules about how sets are used. Normally, sets are locked in place after you make them--the left tile tells what area you can target a tile in, and the right tile tells what area you have to move the targeted tile into. In this mode, it doesn't matter what the order of the tiles are in the set, you can target or move tiles from either place. This will be explained further in the rulebook, but it makes for faster, more tactical games (instead of more brain-burny, strategic games).

Solo Modes and Tutorial Videos

We'll be adding more info about the various solo modes in the updated rulebook. We are also working on full tutorial videos (online rulebooks) for all of the different game modes. These will be available sometime between the end of the campaign and fulfillment.

Reviews

Each update we try to feature a Fugue review. This one comes from Hairy Game Lords.

They appreciated the high level of player interaction in the game! Click the image to read the full review.

Also, Adam had a great time on Board Game Gumbo live. You can watch some of his discussion with host BJ Rozas below:

Next week, Adam will be a featured guest on Getting Geeky With Gamerleaf so look for that.

Thanks again for all of your support! Looking forward to this upcoming week!

Kind regards,

Closing in on the goal! Solo play!
over 4 years ago – Sat, Oct 12, 2019 at 03:34:39 PM

Welcome to Update #2

Thank you to all of our amazing backers!  We're closing in on our goal with your help! As always, we're here to answer any questions you have, so please feel free to share here, in the kickstarter comments, or private message.

Getting Closer!

We are closing in on our funding goal. Thanks for all of your help with sharing!

In the meantime, we'd love to hear what piqued your interest in Fugue! Let us know in the comments on the kickstarter page!

More Reviews

We have more great reviews to share. This one come from Daniel Yocom at Everything Board Games:

Daniel had many positive things to say about Fugue. You can click the image to read the full review.

Daniel and his group focused on the three player mode of Fugue, but there is also a solo option where you can play up to 3 other AI opponents!

Solo Mode

We plan to release a video soon that gives an overview of solo play, but right now, we'll just talk a bit about how it works.

Solo play is set up a bit differently than usual. You arrange your Area tokens like normal, but the opponent places their tokens to the left of yours like in the photo below.

AI vs Human setup

"Lefty", named after the left hemisphere of the brain, uses a simple decision making method to create and use sets (explained in the rulebook). Otherwise, play is just like a regular two player game.

After you've mastered Lefty, you can include Brain, and finally Cypher. If three opponents aren't enough, there is also difficulty scaling. It's even possible to have four AI players battling it out (more on that down the road, but we will say they make some interesting moves against each other!).

The AI system is currently described in the rulebook, but since we're still revising the rulebook for clarity (and adding more pictures), if anyone has a question about how things work let us know.

Thanks Again!

That's about all for this update! Please continue to share the campaign and help Fugue succeed!

Have a great weekend!

8 player Fugue?! Art, & near 80% at day 7!
over 4 years ago – Fri, Oct 11, 2019 at 07:55:16 AM

Welcome to Update #3

We're so very very close to our goal! Thank you! Hitting the goal will allow us to do a small print run of Fugue and get a copy into all of our backer's hands. If we can manage to get a little more, we'll be able to start unlocking stretch goals!

As always, we're here to answer any questions you have, so please feel free to share here, in the kickstarter comments, or private message. And of course, we'd love to hear what piqued your interest in Fugue! Let us know in the comments on the kickstarter page!

Review time!

This review comes from Will at Hungry Gamer

Hungry gamer not only found the mechanics fascinating, but was really impressed by the art and theme of Fugue. You can click the image to read the full review or watch the video review below.

Speaking of that, we're spending some time in this update to talk about the art and theme of Fugue.

A little about Fugue...

I first came across the term Fugue years ago while watching a documentary about the film Lost Highway. Director David Lynch referred to how the main character was suffering a Fugue. He seemed to be switching back and forth between being two different people, Fred and Pete, each with their own overlapping lives. It's a violent, highly disturbing, moebius strip of a film (like most David Lynch movies), and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're into psychological horror and weird art-house flicks (if you are, you've probably seen it already). But the idea of a psychological Fugue was a fascinating concept to me.

Fugue is a very abstract game, but not entirely, and we believed the theme of a psychological battle between different mental forces was a really good fit and helped enhance the gameplay.

Illustrations

When working on the art, we wanted something atmospheric and dreamy--familiar, but also alien, and very mental. We chose to create an explosive green sky for Imagination; a purple lightning-bolt type strike to capture that "eureka" moment of Vision; a calm yet supernatural bottomless lake for depth; an otherworldly flame for passion

Imagination, Vision, Depth, and Passion, as shown on the backs of the score cards.

Design

For the icons, we wanted a similar feel, but simpler with more of a contrast. See the "brain-like explosion" of the Imagination icon:

We felt everything came together well to help create a look and feel of an ethereal mental landscape.

What do you think of the art and theme? Let us know here or in the kickstarter comments.

8 Player Fugue! What?!

One of the most frustrating things at game night can be when you have a game you really want to play, but the player count is just too low.

While Fugue is billed as a four player game, it can actually support at least twice as many players, but only if you add an extra set of the game.

For example, if you combined two sets of Fugue into one, you could have a game that supports up to 8 players. There are a couple simple rules tweaks (basically removing a few extra tiles depending on player count), but nothing major. We are going to include information about how to handle these larger player-count games in the final rulebook.

If that sounds interesting to you, consider pledging for two copies of the game instead of one!

Gumbo Live

Just a reminder, I'll be going on Gumbo Live with host BJ Rozas tomorrow evening at 9:30 EDT! Don't miss it!

In Closing

That's all for now! Thanks for checking out this update. Hope you're having a great start to the week!
